Joan has just
moved to California from Connecticut. Its the summer of 1972 and
all seems well, but theres one big issue she has. Her parents are
always getting into arguments. However, she meets a girl named Fox,
who has similar issues, but her mom left when she was seven.
Sharing their struggles, Fox and Joan write a story that gets them
into a writing class at a nearby college. In that class, Joan
learns to look into everything deeper and ask questions. With that,
she helps herself understand her parents arguments. The biggest
challenge Joan faced was her parents constant fighting. Joans mom
and dad always fought at random, over the littlest concepts. And

splitting up, so she asks her mom one night what the fights are
about, she explains that most of them are about money. When Joan
hears this, she tries to fix it by offering her dad money for her
writing classes, but he denies it. Later, she talks about it with
Fox and her dad, Gus. Gus explains that most of the time, disputes
over money aren't really about money, but power.
